BASIC CHARACTER SURVEY
Body and Appearance 1. Describe the character's height and build. Is he heavyset, thin, short, rangy?
6'4"-ish, lean and toned. Slightly broad shoulders with some measure of muscle mass, but not exactly buff. Close enough to a runner's build.
2. How old is he?
20. Looks older.
3. Describe his posture. Does he carry himself well or does he slouch?
Slouches a bit, partly because he's on the taller side and has whacked his head on lower doorframes before. Also to keep himself unobtrusive. Generally keeps his hands stuffed in his pockers, shoulders hunched forward. 4. How is his health? Is he fit or out of shape? Any illnesses or conditions? Any physical disabilities?
In good health. A few scars here and there, but no disabilities or illnesses. 5. How does he move? Is he clumsy, graceful, tense, fluid?
Calm, controlled, neither fast nor slow. Very deliberate and efficient, without any wasted movements. Kazama generally moves with a military precision, but this is especially evident in any sort of combat situation, where he tends to be most focused and cautious. However, there's always a lingering tension in his movements, and it's difficult to ever see him relaxed. 6. How attractive is this character physically? How does he perceive himself in the mirror?
Average attractiveness. Worsened by the fact that he tends to bundle himself up in very ragged clothes and covers most of his face with his beanie and bandanna. 7. Describe his complexion. Dark, light, clear, scarred?
Slightly dusky and tanned from spending a lot of time outside waiting. Some scarring here and there, but nothing huge. 8. Describe his hair: color, texture, style.
Black-brown, messy, bangs usually sweeping over half his face. Kind of rough, since terrorists usually don't get prime shampoo.
9. What color are his eyes?
Black-brown. Almost always half-lidded in a very sleepy, tired looking stare. Brows usually furrowed.
10. Does the character have any other noteworthy features?
Usually described as just "very tall, with a very tired-looking expression," so there you go.
11. What are his chief tension centers?
I NEVER FUCKING KNOW WHAT TENSION CENTERS ARE.
12. What is the character's wardrobe like? Casual, dressy, utilitarian? Bright colors, pastels, neutrals? Is it varied, or does he have six of the same suit?
Ragged and utilitarian. Mostly very scuffed up clothes in dull colors, tough fabrics that can withstand some wear and tear, stuff that's clearly seen better days. Kazama usually seems to wear lots of layers -- thin shirt, sweater, military-style jacket, army slacks, combat boots, bandanna, beanie, fingerless gloves. As little skin showing as possible. 13. Do his clothes fit well? Does he seem comfortable in them?
They're ... funtional, and that's about all Kazama cares about. He doesn't mind them much, and he'd be obviously uncomfortable in anything that isn't strictly functional.
14. Does he dress the same on the job as he does in his free time? If not, what are the differences?
Free time what free time. But yes, he probably dresses in rather ragged clothes all the time -- most likely just shucks off his jacket and sweater and boots when he can rest. 15. You knew it was coming: Boxers, briefs or commando?
I wonder. ;D
Speech 1. What does this character's voice sound like? High-pitched, deep, hoarse?
Deep and husky. Not exactly scary, but intimidating enough for someone who isn't used to it. 2. How does he normally speak? Loud, soft, fast, evenly? Does he talk easily, or does he hesitate?
Normally, he completely avoids speaking. When he has to, Kazama speaks using as few words as possible. Full sentences (for the most part), but with many words clipped out, no attempts to be polite or beat around the bush. Curt and blunt. Not exactly rude or hostile, but somewhat uninviting.
3. Does the character have a distinct accent or dialect? Any individual quirks of pronunciation? Any, like, you know, verbal tics?
None. He just doesn't like talking.
4. What language/s does he speak, and with how much fluency?
Japanese, fluent. Probably knows a little English, but would really rather not speak it.
5. Does he switch languages or dialects in certain situations?
Nup.
6. Is he a good impromptu speaker, or does he have to think about his words?
HA HA HA no, Kazama always needs to think before speaking, since he's never prepared to talk.
7. Is he eloquent or inarticulate? Under what circumstances might this change?
He has a decent enough vocabulary, but will never speak eloquently -- just say whatever gets his meaning across in as few words as possible. Efficiency is far more important to him than grace.
Mental and Emotional 1. How intelligent is this character? Is he book-smart or street-smart?
He's a fairly sharp cookie, though probably not exactly book-smart. Kazama seems to have a lot of technical knowledge about rifles and pistols, as well as being fairly competent when it comes to hacking or disabling electronics. Probably all just stuff that he's been trained in after becoming a terrorist.
2. Does he think on his feet, or does he need time to deliberate?
Capable of thinking on his feet, though he'd really rather plan ahead when possible just so he doesn't bump into any unpleasant surprises.
3. Describe the character's thought process. Is he more logical, or more intuitive? Idealistic or practical?
Fairly logical, very practical. Highly suspicious of other people, very rarely trusts them, can be a little bit ruthless towards them if he needs to be. Tends to keep all of his emotions locked down tight. 4. What kind of education has the character had?
Attended a normal public school through to ninth grade, his last year of middle school. After Battle Royale happened, he presumably left school entirely to wander aimlessly for a while, and then was recruited by terrorists to begin his training as a sniper. 5. What are his areas of expertise? What, if anything, is he interested in learning more about?
Marksmanship all the way. Kazama is an expert sniper -- probably heavily due to innate talent, as well as some ruthless training. He can snipe off a prisoner held in a high-security holding facility and make a completely clean getaway, as well as being able to snipe off numerous targets quickly and accurately in a skirmish. Knows all the technical details about his rifle, in and out. Also seems pretty competent with a Glock pistol, which he usually carries around.
Although hacking, jamming and programming are Maki's areas of expertise, Kazama also seems to know a decent amount -- at least enough to let him scrape by when he needs to divert attention away from himself. Otherwise, he seems to be a good driver and fairly sharp when it comes to assessing tactical matters.
My headcanon is that he's also good at cooking. 6. Is he an introvert or an extrovert?
Very, very heavily introverted. Kazama generally finds it exhausting to be around other people, since he can never relax when he isn't alone. There are a few exceptions, of course, and he can still function excellently as a soldier around other people, but he'd much rather be alone when he isn't needed. 7. Describe the character's temperament. Is he even-tempered or does he have mood swings? Cheerful or melancholy? Laid-back or driven?
Very even-tempered, enough to be called emotionless -- it's hard to get much of an emotional response of any sort out of Kazama, positive or negative. Generally wears a fairly neutral expression, though the fact that he always looks tired probably makes it come across as more negative. Very driven in general, and hates to be left idle -- Kazama doesn't know what to do with himself if he doesn't have a clear idea of his goals and what he's fighting for. And of course, there's always a rather sickly undercurrent of anger and fear and trauma around him.
8. How does he respond to new people or situations? Is he suspicious, relaxed, timid, enthusiastic?
Highly tense and suspicious. Kazama prefers to observe strangers for a while before having to interact with them, and when he finally does, it tends to be very quiet and deadpan. 9. Is he more likely to act, or to react?
React in social situations, act in combat situations.
10. Which is his default: fight or flight?
Depends. Whichever is more practical. But on a very base level, if he were in great danger, he'd be more likely to just freeze up. 11. Describe the character's sense of humor. Does he appreciate jokes? Puns? Gallows humor? Bathroom humor? Pranks?
Humor what's that. 12. Does the character have any diagnosable mental disorders? If yes, how does he deal with them?
Post-traumatic stress disorder from Battle Royale, for sure. Like most other BR contestants, he never had it dealt with properly, and just learned to live with it for the most part. Also possibly selective mutism, given how much he hates talking.
13. What moments in this character's life have defined him as a person?
Battle Royale. Common theories go that, after receiving a rifle as his randomized weapon, Kazama spent the entirety of his class' round waiting silently in hiding and sniping off a fair number of students to snag the win. This resulted in his great fear of speaking, as he unconsciously associated making any noise with "being discovered" and "being killed." Battle Royale in general made him a very hardened person, forcing himself to cut off most of his emotions to keep from going insane and turning him into the stoic, deadpan, forboding individual that he is.
14. What does he fear?
Being killed uselessly. Kazama would be able to accept dying if it were for the Wild Seven, but he would hate to die without purpose -- especially given the fact that all of his classmates in BR died so that he could live, and he would hate for all of their lives to be wasted along with his.
Kazama also unconsciously holds a fear of speaking, because he always associates it with being discovered and killed. Though this is a more managable fear, and Kazama can speak if he really needs to, it's a big factor for why he avoids it whenever possible.
15. What are his hopes or aspirations?
No personal hopes or aspirations. In the long run, he wants to see the Japanese government crumble, so that no one will ever have to go through Battle Royale again.
16. What is something he doesn't want anyone to find out about him? To anyone outside of the Wild Seven -- the fact that he's a mass-murdering terrorist. In general -- anything personal. Kazama prefers to never say anything about himself.
Relationships 1. Describe this character's relationship with his parents.
They're dead. Killed post-BR so that Kazama could have his identity conveniently changed by the government. Probably had an average, mellow relationship with them pre-BR.
2. Does the character have any siblings? What is/was their relationship like?
If he did, they're dead, too.
3. Are there other blood relatives to whom he is close? Are there ones he can't stand?
Unknown.
4. Are there other, unrelated people whom he considers part of his family? What are his relationships with them?
The Wild Seven are probably the closest thing he has to a family, since they're the only people he'll associate with. Although it's not exactly clear how much he cares for them on a personal level, he obviously wants very much to protect them and their cause.
5. Who is/was the character's best friend? How did they meet?
Sakurai Saki would be the closest thing to a best friend he has. He was introduced to Saki when the terrorist organization he was previously associated with had him assigned to train her as a new sniper. Saki followed him up to the mountains to train, along with her teacher from high school pre-BR, Shinjo. A falling-out between Saki and Shinjo led to Kazama having to kick Shinjo off the mountain; following that, Shinjo was taken hostage by the organization to force Saki to perform a dangerous assassination task for them. Kazama took this as the chance to get both himself and Saki away from the organization, which he knew had the tendency of abandoning and killing off any "unhelpful assets."
Saki is probably the only person that Kazama has shown his softer, kinder side to. Though he usually treats her with the same stoic face that he does towards everyone else, he's gone out of his way to apologize for getting her tangled in complicated terrorist business and tried to get her to safety during the Wild Seven's final battle. Though his feelings are probably mostly platonic, it's still obvious that he cares very much for her -- perhaps a bit like an older brother wanting to guard a younger sister.
6. Does he have other close friends?
He seems more familiar with Imakire than the other Wild Seven members, since he worked for Ushijima before they all entered the Wild Seven. Though not exactly close, Kazama at least tolerates Imakire's louder and more talkative personality without balking, and they seem to communicate decently without speaking much.
7. Does he make friends easily, or does he have trouble getting along with people?
A TERRORIST NEEDS NO FRIENDS.
8. Which does he consider more important: family or friends?
NUP. 9. Is the character single, married, divorced, widowed? Has he been married more than once?
Single forever.
10. Is he currently in a romantic relationship with someone other than a spouse?
HA HA HA.
11. Who was his first crush? Who is his latest?
He probably had some innane crush during middle school, but that all ended after Battle Royale. Kazama probably hasn't held any romantic affections towards anyone else since then, and has no desire to.
12. What does he look for in a romantic partner?
NUP.
13. Does the character have children? Grandchildren? If yes, how does he relate to them? If no, does he want any?
NO.
14. Does he have any rivals or enemies?
The Japanese government must die.
15. What is the character's sexual orientation? Where does he fall on the Kinsey scale?
Kazama's about as sexual as a bag of potatoes. That is, asexual. Close contact of any sort tends to make him incredibly tense, and he's honestly still so deeply entrenched in PTSD that a romantic relationship of any sort would be impossible.
16. How does he feel about sex? How important is it to him?
Hate. Or rather, Kazama would see absolutely no need for it. Any sort of intimacy with another person would make him incredibly tense and nervous, since he doesn't really trust anyone. Whatever sexual desires he'd had as a student were sharply cut off after BR. (And yes, he's a big fat virgin.)
17. What are his turn-ons? Turn-offs? Weird bedroom habits?
None, none, none.

4. How does he regard beliefs that differ from his? Is he tolerant, intolerant, curious, indifferent?
5. What prejudices does he hold? Are they irrational or does he have a good reason for them?

2. What is his social status? Has this changed over time, and if so, how has the change affected him?
3. Where does he live? House, apartment, trailer? Is his home his castle or just a place to crash? What condition is it in? Does he share it with others?
